Playbook catalogues football poses, arranging figures in dense interlocking patterns reminiscent of classical bas-reliefs of men in combat and the appropriation of these settings by renaissance artists, such as Pollaiuolo’s engraving, Battle of the Naked Men. The gestures associated with various plays suggest the theatrical choreography of which was the hallmark of later baroque painting. The mural uses the graphic vernacular of contemporary collegiate sports posters, in which members of the team interchangeably mirror heroic precedents.
