XV Quito Biennial
Plaza San Francisco
Quito, Ecuador, 2006
Four groups of people were posed on a scaffold alongside the intricately carved triumphal arch of the entry of the San Francisco Monastery, one of the largest colonial church complexes in South America. Quechua dance troupe, teenage girls from a parochial school, and police mirror the figures incorporated in the city’s colonial façades. The unrealized intention was to put these images of these new triumphal arches in the place of advertising placards in the back of the ubiquitous taxis that are used by tourists and the local population.
