This constellation of images recomposes details of neoclassical statuary by early 20th century Norwegian-American Hendrik Andersen and early 19th century Bertel Thorvaldsen. Both lived and worked in Rome and reflect the continued attraction to the artistic legacy of the classical era and the Renaissance.
Thorvaldsen draws on mythological themes, such as the Rape of Ganymede and follows in the footsteps of artists like Canova in the idealization of the human form and an approach to fixed canons of beauty. This was embraced by Andersen in his statuary, much of which was meant to adorn his proposed "World City," a beaux art revival urban fantasy.
